Macintosh House QLD

Architecture
  • The Macintosh St house was the original corner store in its area and was built to boundary on both street frontages. In order to retain the character of the existing dwelling, alterations were minimized and a new pavilion added to the rear. The corner site allowed the creation of 2 entries, one for the home based business and the other for private visitors to the home, located in a 2 storey void that acts as the threshold, creating a transition and opportunity for the contemporary extension to be clearly articulated from the character dwelling. The new extension creates ground level living, bedroom spaces all on one level and an adjacent MPR, supervised from the home office, that provide a dedicated play space which will convert to study zones as the need arises. The design maximizes solar orientation, views and inherent qualities of the site. It responds to the dominant character architecture of the area, yet is expressed as a sympathetic contemporary form, harmonizing with rather than mimicking the existing architecture.
